Let's Do Lunch!

I had the good fortune of having lunch with one of our students today. He had selected my name from the Treasure Box:) I always enjoy these lunch dates as it keeps me connected with our students on a personal level. It also reminds me of how difficult their lives must have been in a traditional school setting. This student has auditory processing disorder (which often co-exists with dyslexia) which for him, results in distinct pauses throughout conversation as he processes what was said. Without the simple accommodation of being given more time to respond to questions, this boy would suffer terribly in a classroom. Thankfully he is at the dePaul School, where our teachers give him the extra time he needs to process the information, resulting in responses that are appropriate, accurate and often quite witty!
