Middle School (Grades 5-8)

Preparing for the Next Step—Academic strategies. Personal growth. True independence.
Middle School at dePaul is where students solidify their skills, deepen their confidence, and begin to lead their own learning journeys.
Those arriving from other schools may have spent years trying to compensate for their dyslexia without the right support. Here, they discover what’s possible with expert teaching, individualized strategies, and the tools for long-term success.
At our campus on Sunset Point Road in Clearwater, our Upper School program, known as the Delta Program, offers a rich, structured environment tailored to students with dyslexia and related learning differences. Delta means change, and that’s exactly what this program delivers: measurable academic growth, stronger self-advocacy, and renewed belief in what’s possible.

These are the years when students move from supported to self-directed. They leave dePaul ready for high school, equipped with the tools, strategies, and self-knowledge they need to thrive.
Key Elements of Our Middle School Experience

Rigorous and Scaffolded Academics
Students engage with core subjects through specialized instruction aligned with their learning profile. Orton-Gillingham-based reading continues, alongside structured writing development, hands-on math, and project-based learning in science and social studies.

Extracurriculars and Enrichment Opportunities
After-school programs like Art Club, Flag Football, and the Entrepreneurial Club help students connect socially and build confidence beyond the classroom. Every activity is adapted to support students' unique learning needs while encouraging leadership and joy.

Daily Executive Function
Coaching
Students benefit from an entire class period dedicated to executive function skill-building—learning how to plan, manage time, break down tasks, and self-monitor across subjects. These habits are reinforced in every class and carry into high school and beyond.

Specials and Electives that Build the Whole Child
In addition to our core classes, students have the opportunity to explore interests and develop new talents through Art, Drama, Physical Education, and American Sign Language. These courses provide creative outlets and help students discover new strengths.

Assistive and Instructional Technology
Students use laptops daily to support writing, note-taking, and reading comprehension. Tools like Google Workspace and Learning Ally promote independence and equip students with skills they’ll need in more traditional academic settings.

High School Placement and Transition Readiness
Families receive dedicated guidance as students prepare for the next chapter. We partner closely with parents to explore high school options—mainstream and specialized—and help students prepare for interviews, shadow days, and advocacy in new environments.
